What surveys and focus groups miss
Surveys and focus groups remain the default research tool because they are familiar and affordable, and asking a person a direct question feels like the most natural way to learn anything. A respondent who gives a reason for a choice typically believes it, which is a separate matter from whether that reason accurately explains the decision.
A great deal of buying behaviour is decided before conscious reasoning gets a vote, which means the person answering a survey question is reporting on a decision their conscious mind never made in the first place. Focus groups add a second problem on top of the first. Put eight people in a room and ask for opinions, and the room behaves like a single conversation rather than eight independent data points: whoever speaks first with confidence tends to set the tone, and quiet disagreement usually gets folded into a nod instead of a stated objection. The dynamic is ordinary group psychology, visible in any management meeting or jury room, and it has nothing to do with the honesty of the people in the chairs.
What it costs, and who it is for
The assumption behind the opening line of this piece, that neuromarketing is a Fortune 500 tool, misreads how the field is priced. Part of the reputation is historical. What neuromarketing cannot do
A fair account of this field states its limits plainly. Current instruments do not decode specific thoughts. An EEG trace can show that attention rose sharply at the eleventh second of an ad; it cannot show what the viewer was thinking about in that second, and no cap on a scalp will print out a sentence a person never said aloud.
Marketing-press coverage sometimes describes a brain scan producing a tidy verdict, purchase intent: 73 percent, dressed up as though the machine had read a figure off the inside of someone's skull. That framing is oversell. What the signal supports is comparison. One version of an ad produces a stronger engagement curve than another. One pack design holds a shopper's gaze longer than the pack beside it on the shelf. Reporting that comparison honestly is useful work. Reporting a single precise percentage, the kind a slide deck likes to show a client, asks the data to do something it was never built to do.

There is a further limit, less discussed than the one above. None of these instruments compensates for a vague question. A brand that walks into a study only wanting to know whether people like an ad will get an answer to that question and not much else. A brand that walks in wanting to know whether a specific frame, at second eleven, causes viewers to look away, and whether a recut fixes it, will get an answer worth acting on. A vague brief produces a vague study, whatever instruments are used to run it.
Sample size is another honest limit. Neural and biometric data are noisy at the level of one person, and the signal becomes reliable only once enough participants have gone through the same protocol. A study that skips this step to save money produces a result whose apparent precision is not earned. A finding still needs a human being to decide what to do with it. The instruments describe what happened in the room. Turning that description into a creative brief or a media plan remains a judgement call, made by people, informed by better evidence than a show of hands used to provide.
