Most marketing briefs open with a list: the ingredients, the specifications. The brain runs on something else: a character moving through real difficulty toward a resolution it can track, which is the shape no spec sheet produces.

In October 2014, the neuroeconomist Paul Zak published an article in Harvard Business Review titled "Why Your Brain Loves Good Storytelling." The finding underneath the headline was specific enough to check. Zak's lab had shown that character-driven stories, the kind that build real narrative tension rather than simply describe a subject, reliably cause the brain to synthesize oxytocin. What mattered more was what the oxytocin predicted: how much money participants were later willing to give to a stranger. That is a real transfer of cash, recorded after the story ended, not a rating on a feedback form.

Oxytocin functions in the brain as a safety signal, released when a situation is judged safe enough for connection, and it sits inside the same circuitry that makes people cooperate with strangers rather than guard against them. A story with a real complication and a resolution gives the brain that exact shape to react to: rising tension and a character to feel it through. A list of specifications gives that chemistry nothing to attach to.

The commercial stakes are straightforward. Every piece of content a brand produces competes for a finite resource: attention that has to convert into memory before it can convert into a decision at the point of purchase. A material difference follows from the research above: character-driven narrative reliably produces a measurable chemical response, and a spec sheet does not, which changes what each piece of content is capable of doing inside a brain before any creative judgement even enters the picture.

When a story lands, two brains start moving together

A second, independent line of research arrives at the same conclusion from a different angle entirely. Uri Hasson, a professor at Princeton University, used fMRI to scan a person telling an unscripted, real story and the people listening to it. When the story worked, the listener's brain activity became spatially and temporally coupled to the speaker's own brain activity, a pattern Hasson and his co-authors reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2010. The coupling broke down whenever communication failed. Tighter coupling predicted better understanding between speaker and listener.

One reading of that result is that a good story lets a listener's brain start predicting where the speaker is going, sentence by sentence, and coupling is what that prediction looks like from the outside, on a scan. The Princeton team used real, unscripted storytelling rather than material that was simply read aloud, and the distinction matters for advertising: a flatly read voiceover is a different stimulus to the brain than a story genuinely told, even when the words on the page are identical. This is a distinct mechanism from the oxytocin finding, run in a different lab on different material entirely. What links the two effects is the requirement each one places on the content: a real narrative for the brain to track, something that starts and moves toward an outcome. Strip that shape out and neither effect turns on.

What a feature list cannot do

A feature list has no character and no tension: the battery holds a stated number of hours; the fabric is a stated percentage of cotton. Every uncertainty in it is resolved in the copy itself, before a reader can even form a question, and that resolved-in-advance quality is the specific failure. Prediction needs uncertainty to work against, and coupling needs a person moving through that uncertainty in real time, neither of which a bullet point supplies. Oxytocin, in turn, needs a resolution that follows genuine tension, and nothing in a list of attributes ever built any tension to resolve in the first place. This is visible in pre-testing data before a single respondent says a word: spec-heavy scripts tend to produce engagement curves that open reasonably well and then flatten, because there is no rising uncertainty left to hold attention once the opening claim has already been stated.

Features still matter inside this frame; they simply work better placed inside a narrative than listed beside one. A feature stated as a plain fact closes the loop the instant it is read. The same feature revealed as the answer to a real difficulty gives the brain something to arrive at, rather than something to receive. The number does not change. Where it sits in the structure does.

What makes a business story work

Marketing teams that want a story to land often reach first for a bigger budget or a longer cut, assuming production value is what makes narrative work. Neither the Zak research nor the Hasson research measured production value. Both experiments manipulated structure instead: whether the material gave the brain a specific person inside a specific difficulty, and a resolution the audience could see coming into view. Those two qualities are testable in a way that a word like authentic never is.

A brief can specify the person and the difficulty in a single line, before a camera is booked. A finished script can be checked, scene by scene, for whether the resolution arrives where the build promised it would, or whether it appears from nowhere in the final ten seconds because nobody wrote the middle.

Structure predicts whether a story lands. Budget predicts how polished it looks while doing so.

A brief specific enough to name the person and the difficulty still leaves room for two creative teams to produce two distinct, recognizably different executions of the same underlying story, rather than two generic stories that happen to share a product shot at the end.

In creative review, this is the difference between a note that asks for a more premium feeling and a note that asks a writer to specify exactly what is at stake for the story's subject. The first kind of note is a matter of opinion, arguable in either direction around a conference table. The second kind of note points at a specific, fixable gap in the structure, one a writer can act on that afternoon.

How we test whether a story lands

None of this needs to be taken on faith. A story's engagement curve can be tracked second by second through a piece of video, the same way pre-testing tracks any other creative, and the curve either holds through the section written to carry tension or it collapses before the resolution arrives. A curve that drops in the middle is a specific, visible failure at a specific timestamp, not a subjective impression, and it tells a creative team exactly where the story lost the room.

Facial coding adds a second check: whether the emotional beat the script was written to produce, relief or surprise, shows up on viewers' faces at the moment the script places it, rather than ten seconds later or not at all. A resolution that is meant to land as relief but reads as confusion on the face has a structural problem no amount of media spend will fix. A handful of respondents is usually enough to see whether a curve holds or collapses, because the shape of attention through a script is a consistent, repeatable signal rather than something that needs a large-sample survey to become visible. The cost argument is simple. A pre-test that flags a flat engagement curve costs a fraction of a media budget and takes a matter of days to run. Finding the same problem after a campaign has aired means the fix arrives after the spend, when the only options left are pulling the creative or living with underperformance for the length of the flight. Testing the story before the shoot, not just the final cut, catches structural problems while a script can still be rewritten for the cost of a rewrite rather than a reshoot.

Anansi stories, still told across Jamaica and the wider region, work because a listener can track a specific character through a specific predicament toward an outcome that resolves it, a structure carried by oral repetition long before formal measurement existed. That same specificity is what makes a market vendor's call memorable, and what turns a wake or a nine-night into an evening built from particular, remembered scenes rather than a general eulogy for a life.

Global advertising too often strips that texture out when a script gets adapted for a new market: the same script, the same beats, with the cast and the backdrop swapped for something locally recognizable. What gets lost is exactly the detail that gives an audience's brain something to track, because a generic difficulty resolved in a generic way produces a flat engagement curve regardless of who is on screen or what accent they are speaking in. Applying narrative technique to either brief can work against the message: a reader searching for an instruction has to sit through scene-setting to find it, and the delay becomes the thing people remember instead of the instruction itself.

Character and tension are tools for changing how someone feels about a decision. When there is no decision left to make, only an action to take, they get in the way. Knowing which of the two situations is in front of you is itself part of the craft, worth settling before a script is written rather than after a recall notice reads like a short film.

Before a script is locked, check whether it gives the brain a specific person inside a specific difficulty, and a resolution the audience can follow toward.
